CAN be different

What is the Climate and Nature Bill?

The Climate and Nature Bill (CAN), previously referred to as the CE and CEE Bills, is a proposed piece of legislation, designed to tackle the interconnected climate and nature crises comprehensively.

It stands as the only parliamentary proposal in the UK, that aligns with the latest scientific insights, presenting a unified and thorough approach to address these emergencies.

The goal of CAN is to establish legally binding measures to confront and resolve these crises, in a meaningful and effective way.

Why does CAN matter to B Corps?

B the difference

B Corps are committed to balancing profit and purpose, actively working toward environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

Supporting the CAN Bill aligns perfectly with B Corps’ mission to address environmental challenges and foster systemic change.

The Bill’s goals of reversing environmental damage, setting hard targets, and fostering collaboration resonate with the values of the B Corp movement

B Corps’ support for the CAN Bill is just what it needs to succeed when it next returns to parliament.

What is Zero Hour?

CAN do attitude

Zero Hour is the driving force behind the campaign pushing for CAN to be put to Parliament. This group, primarily composed of volunteers, are united by their commitment to ensuring that the UK government implements an emergency strategy to address the environmental challenges we face. They work tirelessly to amplify the importance of the Bill, and rally public and political support for its adoption.

The History of the Bill and its Current Status

Big Ben
Big Ben, Big Changes

The CAN Bill is rooted in the Big Ask campaign, which was instrumental in the creation of the 2008 Climate Change Act.

Building on this legacy, the CAN Bill has garnered support from 216 Members of Parliament (MPs), and peers from across the political spectrum.

It has also attracted endorsements from notable figures, including:

  • Kumi Naidoo (former Greenpeace International Executive Director)

While the Bill has made significant strides in gaining support, it still needs further momentum to ensure it is prioritised in Parliament and receives the attention it deserves.

What Are Zero Hour’s Goals?

If anyone CAN

Zero Hour’s campaign for the CAN Bill focuses on achieving three main objectives:

  1. Implement Hard Targets: Establish concrete, enforceable measures with tangible results, rather than relying on vague commitments or verbal promises.

  1. Reverse Environmental Damage: Go beyond merely halting harmful actions; actively restore and rebuild the natural ecosystems that have been destroyed.

  1. Foster Collaboration: Unite diverse voices in an assembly that supports the Government and Parliament in devising an emergency strategy, to address the climate and nature crises effectively.

What does the Bill and Zero Hour need?

For the CAN Bill to succeed, it requires a louder public voice and increased support. The campaign must become an overwhelming force that the government cannot ignore or delay.

Without widespread backing, there is a risk that the Bill could languish in a queue of proposed legislation, ultimately receiving weak parliamentary consideration.

How CAN Your Business Support the Campaign?

Hands all in
All in

If you want to help bring the CAN Bill to life, here’s what your business can do:

  • Contact Your MP: Write to your MP, urging them to support the cross-party Bill when it returns to Parliament, as securing the backing of 100 MPs is crucial for the Bill’s success.
  • Join the Campaign: encourage your employees to join the 60,000 individuals who have already shown their support by adding your name to the bill. This collective voice demonstrates to MPs that the campaign matters to the public.

By taking these simple steps, B Corps can not only further contribute to the growing movement to address the climate and nature crises, to ensure a sustainable future for the UK, but be the support the CAN Bill needs to succeed.
